Isola di Capo Rizzuto is a relevant tourist centre on Calabria's Ionian coast.
Traces of human settlement, dating back to at least 5000 years b.C., have been found on its territory. It was founded by a people coming from North Africa, the Japigi, and they give their name to the shores that bath in the sea in front of them and that, in the ancient time, were known as 'Promontorium Japigium', today Capo Rizzuto, Capo Cimiti and Le Castella.
Local history is continuously linked to legend. The oldest one narrates that Astiochena, Priam's sister, who survived to Troy's destruction, founded the city. After the Greek's colonization, in this place the lucky historical period, known as Magna Grecia, happened and during it, the nearby town of Crotone became one of the most important cultural and economic poles at that time.
The marine protected area of Capo Rizzuto is one of the most fascinating protected areas in all the Mediterranean with a varied beauty: the sky and the sea's changing tones, the rocks, the clay, the fine red/orange-coloured sand.
The seabed's are characterized by modest depth almost everywhere, except by the rocky capes. In this area there are different types of seabed's, both sandy and rocky, and both with different species.
